Though all of the poems were accepted for publication in THE SLEEP OF GRASS prior to their being published elsewhere, several publishers need to be credited since, in the interim, they have published them.
Donnell Hunter's poem, "The Shadow," was published in 1994 by CALAPOOYA COLLAGE, a magazine edited by Tom Ferté in Monmouth, Oregon. Barbara La Morticella's poem, "Cherries," has been published in FIREWEED magazine. Robert Bly's poem, "When William Stafford Died," has been published in MEDITATIONS ON THE INSATIABLE SOUL, HarperCollins, 1994. Copyright 1994 by Robert Bly. Reprinted with his permission. Kathleen Norris's poem, "All Saints, All Souls," was published in LITTLE GIRLS IN CHURCH, by Kathleen Norris, Copyright 1995. All rights are controlled by the University of Pittsburgh Press, Pittsburgh PA 15261. Used by permission of the University of Pittsburgh Press. All rights to the other poems remain with their authors. THE SLEEP OF GRASS gets its title from the phrase in Kathleen Norris's poem and was used with her permission. I am grateful to Louis Jenkins for his early encouragement. Also thanks to Kim Stafford, Dorothy Stafford, Tom Ferté, Thom Tammaro, Ellen Kort, Lynn Shoemaker, Lee DeForest, and Glenn Mitchell for their interest, support, and kindness. Of course, thanks to all the poets who participated in this endeavor and without whom it would have been impossible. My parents, Floyd and Kathleen, gave this project more than anyone will know. My deep gratitude goes to my friends, Bob Lee and Dave Craig. And the most special thanks to my co-conspirator, Heidi Schmidt. Photography by Mark Mitchell. Edited by Mark Mitchell. |
