QUESTIONS I DIDN'T
GET TO ASK

by Donnell Hunter
Before they left I wanted to ask
about the hat, how much he paid.
Mother sat out in the car. "See you
later," she smiled, but never returned.
One day a friend almost drowned.
I forgot about that dream. For sure it looked
like rain. Before I could ask him
why, a fish tugged at the line.
Out back a bird screamed, "Get Real!"
When I went to say, "What do you mean?"
he swept the lawn with his long black tail.
Then I met this guy who said, "Ask me."
The river was cold and far from the spring,
yet opened its throat and began to sing.
