Wood Engravings and Etchings
by Ladislav Hanka
Michigan artist, Ladislav R. Hanka, describes his art: "Essentially, I attempt to portray the face of divinity by drawing upon the physical evidence. I suspect that with sufficient attention and familiarity all things cease to be foreign and enter the ranks of the living. Much of my artwork is a reflective testament of the displaced—of the refugees from industrial society; of the exterminated Michigan Grayling, of the pine forests and prairies driven out with the Indians and subsequently the farmers to marginal places. If my work has power to move people, it is because they still dream of being whole. Though the pains of separation must be acknowledged, they can be made whole through the prayer-like act of art." photo of Ladislav Hanka

All of the wood engravings are provided courtesy of Karl Barnaby of Snowy Egret magazine which is one of the most beautiful magazines we've seen. The engravings included in the magazine are originals "printed on Tableau, a 100% hemp paper, and were cut in end-grain boxwood and editioned directly from the original blocks, using a Vandercook proof press."

Now in its 75th year, Snowy Egret "explores the literary, artistic, historical, and philosophical aspect of natural history inviting those with a strong affinity to the natural world to submit writing which celebrates the abundance and beauty of nature and examines the variety of ways, both positive and negative, through which human beings interact with the environment and living things."

Subscriptions for the semi-annual journal are $12 for one year, $20 for two years. Send all subscriptions and submissions to:
